Cannonau is an extremely versatile grape variety from which very different wines are made. We offer two of them in youthful and fresh versions.
Due to its survival skills in arid and stony climates and its productivity, the grape Cannonau, which originated in Spain (although there are those who argue, with rather solid arguments, for its Sardinian origin), has successfully spread throughout the world. Garnacha, Grenache Noir, Canonaxo, Alicante and Roussillon are just some of the synonyms by which it is known.
In Sardinia, its Italian cradle, the Cannonau grape is widespread everywhere and is entitled to the regional regional. Very rich wines in alcohol are made from this grape variety, and in fact the specifications call for 13.5° for the normal type and as much as 15° for the riserva.
Cannonau is widespread in rosé and even white versions, but the dried grapes also give rise to a dessert wine, Anghelu Ruju, of great character and elegance, which is unrivaled by the famous Port.
As dry red gives remarkable results when the grapes come from vineyards cultivated with strict quality criteria (i.e., low yield per hectare) and are vinified with great care. The wine thus obtained reaches full maturity within four to five years, but compared to the total quantities produced it still represents a rather small percentage even though it is steadily growing and increasingly defined according to the areas of production.
However, there are young versions of Cannonau that give great palatal satisfaction without melting the credit card. We have chosen two, the first from the company Audarya and the second by Mora&Memo, both located in Serdiana, in the province of South Sardinia, north of Cagliari. It is the most viticultural area in the region and is home to large and historic Sardinian companies.
Audarya
Salvatore and Nicoletta Pala are the very young players in the birth of this ambitious new company. Vineyards worked with obsessive care and a high-level technical staff have achieved results since their first market release that might seem surprising only to those who do not know the overwhelming passion of the two young men. Production is deliberately focused exclusively on the typical grape varieties of the area.
Mora&Memo
A few years ago Elisabetta Pala, daughter and granddaughter of art, decided to make “her” wines. And he chose the southeastern part of Sardinia to acquire vineyards and produce his grapes. Thus were born some very interesting and extremely Mediterranean wines, in terms of origins and styles.
