Blend or single-vineyard?

Vini bianchi autoctoni italiani

Let’s talk about native white grape varieties and present two great wines, the first made from a blend of several varieties and the second from a single grape variety. Which one do you prefer?

It is never easy to choose a wine, and the choice depends not only on the economic availability, because in Italy we have the opportunity to drink very well without spending big money. Proof of this is this column, which features only wines found at the shelf or on online sites for less than 15 euros a bottle.

Much also depends on what is expected from that particular wine, perhaps in relation to the dish you have decided to prepare. But surely another option is the grape varieties from which that wine comes. Do we prefer the opportunity given by a palette of different grapes or are we more attracted to the typicality of a single grape variety?

You can find out by going to taste the two “samples” we have chosen to offer you: the Custoza Superiore Cà del Magro 2021 Monte del Fra, a blend of 5 different grapes, as is within the possibilities offered by the disciplinary, and the Bianchello del Metauro Superiore Chiaraluce 2021 Crespaia, produced from the single Bianchello grape.

Let us know in the comments what you prefer. All we can tell you from our side is that these are two great wines at a small price.

But first a few words about the producers:

Monte del Fra

It is a reality that was born in the late 1950s in the Custoza area. Now the Monte del Frà winery covers 217 hectares of vineyards scattered between Lake Garda and Valpolicella Classica; the style changes depending on the wines, but the coherence and relevance to the various territories is very close thanks to the rigorous choices in the cellar and in the vineyard that enhance the prized crus to which they belong.

Crespaia

This small winery specializes in the production of Bianchello del Metauro, with small plots of Sangiovese, Montepulciano and Chardonnay as well. Established in 2011 on the rolling hills surrounding Fano, it enjoys the hillside air and influences of the Adriatic Sea, which is only three kilometers away. The farm’s ten hectares of vineyards are all organically farmed; there is modern technological equipment in the winery that does not overpower their wine-making know-how. The 3 estate’s still wines are closed with screw caps. They also produce a very good oil.
