Pergole Torte vertical tasting

An iconic Tuscan wine that Sergio Manetti first and his son Martino later stubbornly made since 1977, against the Chianti Classico specification, to exalt pure Sangiovese.

It all began in 1977, when Sergio Manetti, in controversy with the Chianti Classico regulations, which at the time did not allow the production of a DOC wine with the Sangiovese alone, he began to vinify in purity what came from his best vineyard, those of Pergole Torte, precisely.

Sergio made what could be described as a liquid protest, renouncing various appellations and making the wine he felt needed to be made. With the complicity of Julius Gambelli, a legend of
winemaking
, produced the first vintage of a wine destined to become a true icon, this time not rhetorical, of the area’s wines. One of the greatest Chianti Classico ever made that could not be called that, but was just a “table wine.” Veronelli replied: “Not table wines, but fabulous wines.” and with Sergio they became best friends.

But his story (Sergio left us in 2000) and that of his wines are known by many. As all wine lovers worthy of the name know well that his son Martino then took the corporate reins, aided by Paolo Salvi, a student of Gambelli’s, to carry out a project and a dream. 100% Sangiovese, fermentation and maceration in cement tanks for just under a month, maturation in barriques and large barrels for two years. Labels with abstract women’s faces designed by Alberto Manfredi make this legendary wine even more fascinating and have certainly contributed to its fame.

Le Pergole Torte has made its mark on Chianti and Italian wine history. A fabulous wine indeed.
