The characteristics of the Rhine territory

The Roero area lies in the heart of the Piedmont wine hills in that portion of the province of Cuneo between Langhe and Monferrato on the left bank of the Tanaro River. Declares Massimo Damonte, president of the Protection Consortium, who was present at the lunch along with the two vice presidents Francesco Monchiero and Angelo Negro, “The establishment of our consortium ten years ago opened up new expressive opportunities for the area by highlighting its potential and uniqueness related especially to itssoils, geologically more recent than the Langhe, rich in marine sands, yellow and red, and fossils. A terroir capable of giving birth to both elegant, long-lived reds and whites with characteristics particularly in tune with the tastes of younger generations and new consumption habits“.
The Consorzio Tutela Roero represents 258 members for a total area of more than 1,300 hectares and expresses an annual production of about 8 million bottles of which 90% are Roero Bianco Docg and 10% Roero Rosso Docg. The municipality of Canale, the nerve center of the appellation, contributes 23 percent of production.
The wines we tasted

We were beautifully welcomed into the elegant halls of Casa Baglioni with a preview of Roero Spumante 2018 by Angelo Negro
Forty-eight months on the lees. A wine that fits perfectly in the Italian vein of sparkling wine from native grape varieties, being 100% Arneis. Delicate and floral nose, the fairly fresh cut endowed with great drinkability and few asperities despite being a pas dosé, gives a fine and pleasant perlage and a savory and citrusy finish. Its appeal lies precisely in its fresh, fragrant character with no particular hardness in the mouth. (90/100)

Roero Arneis San Michele 2022 Deltetto
Pairing: Tartare of fassone ox with egg cream and black truffle
Fine and refined nose with definite floral notes of lime, citrusy notes of lemon peel, grapefruit, and thiol notes of tomato leaf. Mouth soft, very savory, medium acidity. Remnants of ripe fruit, apricot and peach, enhance a slightly almondy finish (89/100).

Roero Arneis Renesio 2013 Malvirà
Pairing: Sardinian fregola with saffron and fennel with green clams.
Renesio is one of 134 MGAs, additional geographical mentions, awarded to Roero since 2017. Arneis has been grown in the Roero practically since time immemorial. We find the earliest written traces of this, in the late 1400s and early 1500s, in the forms
Reneysium e Ornesium and in the mention of a vineyard called
“muscatelli et renexij”: possible reference today’s Canalese locality Renesio, where this variety was probably grown. As is not infrequently the case with other whites not only from Piedmont, aging gives the wine hydrocarbon notes and pleasant and original hints of saffron, on a vegetal background of boxwood. Savory mouthfeel, without excessive harshness, notes of pastry and Catalan cream emerge on the finish.

Roero Riserva Printi 2000 Monchiero Carbone
Pairing: Thyme roasted lamb chop with vegetable caponatina and puffed potatoes
I wouldn’t have thought almost two decades later to taste this wine again, which was still infantile then. It was 2006 and I tasted it right with Daniele Cernilli. At the time it struck me as powerful, textured, and an overly invasive wood. Now the nose is deep and intense. Mature in its well-deployed tertiary notes of dried mushroom, wet earth, truffle and prune. Robust mouthfeel, enveloping balsamic finish with little to envy its Langa cousins. 94/100
Dulcis in fundo
Chocolate cherry soup with cinnamon ice cream.
