Cantina Michele Perillo, Castelfranci’s Taurasi excellence, is launching its Fiano di Avellino produced in only 1,000 bottles with the 2022 vintage.
In the village of Castelfranci, nestled in the hills of Irpinia, the Michele Perillo Winery, an authentic jewel of the Italian wine scene, has been dedicated for over twenty-five years to the production of the Taurasi. This wine, an emblem of Irpinia’s winemaking tradition, finds in Cantina Perillo one of its most authentic expressions.
Starting this year, the winery will enrich its offerings with the Fiano di Avellino, the second white wine of the Perillo family, which already produces the renowned Coda di Volpe.
The roots of tradition
The history of Michele Perillo Winery is firmly rooted in the winemaking tradition of Castelfranci, an area renowned for the quality of its vineyards and climatic conditions ideal for the cultivation of Aglianico, the grape variety from which Taurasi is made.
Michele Perillo, with his first Taurasi on the market, vintage 1999, has been able to enhance the characteristics of the wine and the territory, becoming over the years an ambassador of that handkerchief of Irpinia, enclosed in the area of the
Calore Valley
. His wines, in fact, have great character. Able to best express the peculiarities of the Aglianico grape, which in Castelfranci ripens late, in some vintages in early December!
The territory
Located in the heart of theIrpinia, Castelfranci borders Montemarano, Nusco, Paternopoli and Torella dei Lombardi. This area offers extraordinary soil and climate conditions for viticulture.
The vineyards of the Perillo Winery are spread over hilly soils, characterized by clay and limestone soils, with the presence of tuff and sand, which give the wines a complex structure and an extraordinary longevity. Strong temperature fluctuations between day and night promote the slow and gradual ripening of the grapes, enriching them with intense aromas and flavors.
Fiano di Avellino: a new label from Michele Perillo Winery.
This time we do not want to talk about the famous Taurasi, nor about the very small production of the Coda di Volpe, obtained from the old plants of the 1930s, which alternate with centuries-old plants of Aglianico, biotype Coda di Cavallo, bred in starzeta and espalier. The protagonist today is the Fiano di Avellino, which saw its first market entry with the 2022 vintage..
Presented a few months ago, Fiano di Avellino 2022 was strongly desired by Felice and Nicola Perillo, Michele’s sons, who have long taken care of the vineyards and winery. Fiano grapes come from the small (3,500 meters) and young vineyard in Contrada Baiano. After vinification, they rest in steel for a long period in pure Perillo style, then continue in the bottle.
Fiano di Avellino saw the light a few months ago in only 1,000 bottles, closing the circle of the company’s production and adding further interest to the range of Michele Perillo Winery. This is a young wine that needs time to excite. As is already the case with the winery’s other labels, time, waiting return to the glass what belongs to it. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
