We remedy an error of denomination published in the Essential Guide to Italian Wines 2024 regarding Cantine Santa Barbara in Puglia.
We received a phone call from. Maria Rosaria Giorgiani, owner of the Catine Santa Barbarain Apulia, who was complaining that on the Essential Guide to Italian Wines 2024 in the tab dedicated to her winery we had misspelled the denomination of the wines reviewed.
Primitivo di Manduria Riserva Doc
The lady is absolutely right: at her Riserva 2016 , which is aPrimitivo di Manduria Doc, we have indicated as the denomination Salento Primitivo Igt and we apologize to the company and to the readers. Unfortunately, by publishing in the guide -which is prepared in the editorial office in just two months- a review of more than 3 thousand wines an error of the denomination can happen. It shouldn’t, but it happens.
Salento Rosato Igt
The error, the lady pointed out to us, also concerns the Rosato Capirusso, marked by us as Puglia Igt when in fact it is Salento Igt. In this case, however, we have on our side the lack of clarity of the sheet sent to us by the winery, which says only Igt without specifying which Igt it is, and their website, which indicates Puglia Igt (it was, the lady told me, until the 2021 vintage, but the website does not show the update).
A few words about the company
It is a large and productive reality in Salento that has been active for three generations. Cantine Santa Barbara is carried on by the Giorgiani family, which is particularly attentive to the winemaking of local grapes. This is a sizeable winery, 70 hectares planted with vines and about 2 million bottles produced, spanning a wide range of labels.
In the interest of fairness, we publish here on the website the two wine sheets with the correct denominations.
