Slow Food Italy, the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Pollenzo and the Laudato Si' Communities have launched an appeal (with related signature collection) to include nutrition education as a compulsory teaching in schools of all levels.
This time, one really cannot but agree with the initiative that Slow Food Italia Aps, the Laudato Si’ Communities and the University of Gastronomic Sciences of Pollenzo (UNISG) are carrying out. There is an appeal and a request to sign it, and I personally have already done so with conviction.
The text is below and is about the need to bring into schools the teaching ofnutrition education. This seems right to me, beyond any political divisions or similar quarrels.
Informing children about such issues has to do with the civility of a state. So we are publishing the appeal as well, complete with introductory remarks.
With food you educate, with food you change
The food choices we perform several times a day can become an important lever of change. For this to happen, there is an urgent need for a major investment in nutrition education that provides young people with the tools to become protagonists of their own future.
Nutrition education makes it possible to Rediscover the pleasure of food, to understand its value, to learn about how it is produced, processed and distributed, to understand its social, cultural, economic and environmental dynamics.
Through nutrition education and the virtuous eating behaviors of all of us, the dinner table can become a place of awareness and pleasure, and the area where the ecological conversion takes shape most quickly, effectively, concretely and on a daily basis.
At the same time, food is the ideal tool for experimenting with and promoting an articulate, complex and creative education that values interdependence, the environment and the commons.
I am therefore calling on the Italian government to include nutrition education as a compulsory teaching in schools of all levels, and as an individual, I am committed to involving many other people and realities, because only by coming together can we really make a difference.
In order to concretely support the cause and in the belief that it is no longer enough to make demands, but it is also necessary to take responsibility, in my daily life I strive to consciously choose what I eat by adopting a diet that is healthy for the body and sustainable for the planet.
