The historic Sicilian winery Duca di Salaparuta celebrates the milestone of 200 vintages with a series of initiatives involving Bagheria, which has always been a hub of excellence between painting, culture and food and wine.
It is history and territory that make the concept of the iconic full of meaning in the world of wine. A time-breathing, dream-fulfilling perspective that engages, connects, and reflects all the magic of a brand that, in Sicily, has its roots in the earth, like the vine. 200 years that tell, between Bagheria, Aspra, Mongerbino and Casteldaccia, a virtuous model of enterprise, important for the communities that live it, day by day.
First and foremost, work is celebrated, keeping faith with the Alliata family’s entrepreneurial idea and the modernity that, in every age,Duca di Salaparuta has been able to affirm. Celebrations that, in 2024, are meant to be an act of love addressed to a Sicily that has not lost its soul and desire to surround itself with beauty, art and poetry. Bagheria is its beating heart and Duca di Salaparuta recovers and enhances the link, through the painting of Renato Guttuso, the photography of Mimmo Pintacuda, the cart art of Emilio Murdolo, which inspired the entire label restyling project celebrating the 200-year milestone.
The synergy with the territory
Thus, 2024 will be marked by an enocultural enhancement project that, in addition to the exceptional restyling of the most representative labels, will include the creation of a short-documentary dedicated to the creative flair of extraordinary Sicilian artists. In addition, collateral initiatives open to synergies with the territory, in a recovery of the roots of a land that still smells of orange blossom, in a stage of excellence between painting, culture and food and wine.
“We celebrate 200 vintages of an enterprise that has shaped the oenological destiny of Sicily. – declares Roberto Magnisi, director of Cantine Duca di Salaparuta. – We decided to break down the boundaries of our Wineries to embrace a land with a strong communicative identity. Bottles become vectors of art, through the expression of Renato Guttuso with his Landscape of Aspra, but also some photographic shots by Mimmo Pintacuda. For the two icons of Duca di Salaparuta, Bianca di Valguarnera and Duca Enrico, these 200 years become a gold figure with the signature in lacquer red, to enhance their preciousness and prestige – concludes Roberto Magnisi-an expression of that desire for challenge that has characterized Duca di Salaparuta since its early days.”
200 years of oenological challenge
The first visionary of a dream come true is Giuseppe Alliata Duke of Salaparuta, when in 1824 he decided to make wine at his summer residence, Villa Valguarnera. He brings grapes from his Casteldaccia holdings here, resulting in Identity wines, already elegant and innovative for that era, which at first will be shared at official lunches and family ceremonies. Passion gives way to an unprecedented oenological challenge, led by such illustrious names as Edoardo, Enrico and Topazia Alliata. The rest is history.
From one generation to the next, the highest standards of quality have been achieved, and it is no coincidence that today the winery represents the island’s oldest winemaking tradition with a range of products always centered on identity, pleasantness and elegance, with an international scope. In what is, today, considered the first true entrepreneurial example of winemaking on the northwest coast of Sicily, it was decided to honor 200 vintages, reconnecting the winery to the values of the territory, to its deepest and truest expressions, grasping the importance of the cultural terroir that is the City of Bagheria.
The Authentic Sicilian line
Suggestions and landscapes cover the line Authentic of Sicily with the brushstrokes and colors of Landscape of Aspra, a work created in 1959 by the great Bagheria artist Renato Guttuso, who on the 50th anniversary of his death returns to the spotlight at Villa Cattolica with the inauguration of an unprecedented exhibit within the museum named after him; a valuable anniversary, which sees accomplices Duca di Salaparuta and the museum structure, in a synergy that looks to the future of a world-class historical and artistic heritage.
Le Tenute and Triskelè line
The interweaving of artistic worlds between life and lives also leaves its mark in Le Tenute Line with Mimmo Pintacuda ‘s photographs that, with his unmistakable black and white, etch the imagination, evoking man’s relationship with a sincere land.
The exaltation of identity then continues with Emilio Murdolo, the first painter to have expressed himself through Sicilian carts: it is his image of the place where it all began, Villa Valguarnera, depicted on a new oenological project that stems from a love for Nero d’Avola and a name dear to the winery, Triskelè.
The two hundred years of Duca di Salaparuta are inextricably linked to Bagheria and its territory, to the artists who lived between the two great wars, who unveiled its inspiring power and the beauty of its gardens, 18th-century villas, and coastal landscapes. An identity heritage that goes hand in hand with a long winemaking tradition and a new mission: to open up to the territory, enhance its intangible and material heritages, and identify its future.
