The importance of Vermentino in Maremma
“As we know, more than 30 percent of the wines of the Maremma Toscana DOC are made from the Vermentino grape variety, a very large part of which is presented pure, making Maremma the most important enclave in the region for the production of white wines. – confirmation Francis Mazzei at the head of the Consortium for almost six years and has always been convinced that this grape variety is one of the most important markers of the Denomination. – Vermentino is a sea grape variety that finds its natural habitat in Maremma, with different expressive personalities depending on soil, altitude and distance from the coast. I strongly believe that it can aspire to compare with the world’s great red and white wines because of its complex personality“.
“Vermentino certainly confirms itself as a grape variety of great character and in continuous growth in our territory so much so that 50% of the hectares cultivated in Tuscany with this variety can be found in Maremma. Of the more than 970 hectares in our territory, nearly 60 percent are less than 13 years old and more than 40 percent do not reach eight years, so these are relatively young plants. – Luca Pollini, director of the Consortium, emphasizes. – A fascinating variety not only in its young and fresh version, but also in its more complex evolution where it detected excellent structure and longevity. It is always exciting to put it to the test through the Vermentino Grand Prix initiative.“.

The Jury was composed of representatives from starred restaurants in Maremma, wine shop owners, delegates from associations and industry technicians including Mario Bonamici, who organizes the International and National Vermentino Competitions in Cagliari. There were 73 wines for examination, so up from the 2023 edition when there were 60, and of these, more than half were from the most recent vintage, 2023, about 35 percent were from the 2022 vintage, and 10 percent represented wines from less recent vintages such as 2019, 2020, and 2021. Also present are more special types such as those elaborated in ovetto, cement, amphora, cocciopesto or-though a minority-in wood, and wines of the new “Superiore” mention. The Top Ten 2024 mirrored the distribution of the samples examined, with six out of ten vermentinos from the most recent vintage and the other four from earlier vintages, one of them with the Superiore designation.
The top ten selected during the Vermentino Grand Prix 2024 will be tasting for the first time at the upcoming Vinitaly . You’ll find them at the Consortium’s booth (Hall 9 Stand B16), where the many types of the DOC will be presented with new vintages and a collective of wineries.
