Kicking off the “Soave Identity Project” on this basis:
-
Consortium unanimously approves reduction in yields per hectare for greater competitiveness.
-
With the increase to 30 percent of checks by the SIQURIA certification body, Soave’s is among the top DOCs in Italy in terms of the number of field checks.
-
Attention to the environment, strong responsibility of the production base and maximum consumer protection. Full support from the Veneto Region.
Continuing along the path of highly selected quality, mapped out since last July; making the denomination even more competitive in the markets . Produce in an even more environmentally friendly way. Protect the end consumer at the time of purchase.
These are the pillars on which the “Soave Identity Project”, the set of directives and best practices adopted within the Soave appellation, including the reduction of yields per hectare, unanimously approved by the Assembly of the Consortium of Protection in these days, is based.
From suspending plants to reducing yields
After deliberating last summer on the suspension of facilities for the purpose of claiming for vineyards made after July 31, 2023, and a block claim for the 2023 and 2024 seasons, the following was approved at the assembly meeting in late December reduction in yields per hectare provided in the specification for all Soave Doc productions.
Following this, it was also collegially decided to increase the number of audits to 30%. by the SIQURIA certifying body on compliance with the maximum allowed yield: with 2024, therefore, 30 percent of the winegrowers in the appellation will be inspected by the certifying body during the period when the bunch is on the vine in order to estimate the potential yield of the vineyard and compliance with the newly established production limits.
Such choices in production management actually place Soave today among the top Italian appellations in terms of the percentage of controls carried out in the vineyard.
Total support from the Veneto Region for which DOC Soave is and remains a strategic asset of fundamental importance.
Naming management
The goal aimed at with these designation management measures is to Pose in a toned-down manner with respect to markets, in Italy and abroad, proposing a wine that is markedly identifiable from the perspective of vineyard and terroir, thanks to shared agricultural practices capable of managing the natural productive exuberance of the Garganega.
A choice with a strong impact not only in terms of quality, but also in terms of ethics: dosing the productivity of vineyards with foresight actually means reducing the energy input in their overall management, from vineyard to winery, primarily in terms of water resources.
Strong then is the sense of responsibility towards consumers, who will thus have the certainty of buying wines that are the result of important control and selection work.
A measure, adopted today, that also becomes strategic for wine growers: starting now they will already be able to carry out pruning work by planning and deciding right away which are the most suitable vineyards to be destined for the production of Soave and which ones for other types.
Reorganization of production
“What we have put in place,” highlights Sandro Gini, president of the Consorzio di Tutela del Soave – is a set of measures that, for the past two years or so, have aimed at a strong internal reorganization on the production front with the result of guaranteeing the final consumer wines that are the result of a strict selection, able to distinguish themselves by their high quality. It is an important response that as an appellation we intend to give to markets that, today more than ever, are looking for wines with a strong identity, with an alcohol content that is not too high“.
For Soave a call to simply be itself. Hence the name Soave Identity Project.
“Garganega, the mother of Soave, is a generous grape and for that reason its natural exuberance must be dosed. If cultivated with foresight and intelligence, it has nothing to envy vines such as Chardonnay or Sauvignon and need not fear comparison with aromatic varieties. The Soave – concludes Gini – is characterized precisely by its “olfactory lightness” thatvaries according to the areas of production but precisely this characteristic can give rise to a fascinating complexity, supported by the natural vocation of this great Veronese white to evolve over time.”
