Rome Capital’s yes to memorandum of understanding with Le Donne del Vino association. Agriculture Councillor Sabrina Alfonsi: “We stand by women entrepreneurs in the wine sector in Rome and Lazio.”

A resolution presented by Councillor for Agriculture, Environment and Waste Cycle Sabrina Alfonsi regarding a memorandum of understanding to be signed between Rome’s capital city and the National Association Le Donne del Vino was approved by the Capitoline Council.

The agreement, which will be made operational through collaboration with the Lazio Delegation of the Association, aims to protect and enhance the wine production of the territory of Rome and Lazio and promote wine culture, entrepreneurship in the sector and the preservation of the landscape and environmental heritage of the Roman countryside.

The Memorandum of Understanding

Among the actions included in the memorandum of understanding are the promotion of the wines of Rome and Lazio in the restaurant network, the involvement of educational institutions to spread the culture of conscious drinking, the participation in events such as, for example, Estate Romana or Altaroma, the creation of an award to be given to female exponents of the world of culture, art, science, and sports, and the promotion of wine tourism.

Through this memorandum of understanding, we want to strengthen collaboration with the vibrant reality of female entrepreneurship in the wine sector in Rome and Lazio. As an administration, we are strongly committed to the enhancement of local productions, and with this in mind we wanted to join the Wine and Oil City Associations and actively participate in national and international events such as Vinitaly and the Salone del Gusto. We are convinced that Rome, as its history tells, can become a reference for its wine production and, with this goal, we are working on the definition of an Urban Vineyard Plan in the Capital, and collaboration with women entrepreneurs will be of crucial importance” declares Councillor Alfonsi.

“The Association ‘Le Donne del Vino’ is particularly proud and proud of the active cooperation and willingness shown by the Capitoline Department of Agriculture. Our hope is to create a bridge between the wines of Lazio’s female producers and Rome, forming an ideal springboard to relaunch the wonderful products of our region.” Manuela Zennaro, head of the Lazio delegation of the national association ‘Le Donne del Vino,’ adds.

A few facts about viticulture in Latium

In Latium, the area devoted to vines amounts to about 20 thousand hectares, to the cultivation of which about twenty thousand farms, mostly small ones, are dedicated. The regional map of quality wines has 27 DOC, 3 DOCG and 6 IGT.

The latest is the Rome Doc, a sort of ‘umbrella’ designation intended to embrace under a single indication the entire territory of the Metropolitan City of Rome, recognizing in the name of the capital a guarantee of quality, typicality and exclusivity.

In this scenario Rome can increasingly become a national, European and international reference point. Bringing vines back to Rome today also means focusing on a recovery of the agricultural city, new job opportunities and aggregation.

In this direction goes the “Urban Vineyard Plan in the Capital,” a wide-ranging project that touches on issues of sustainability, agricultural production, and taste.
