Roma DOCet: Wine told to young people for conscious consumption

Telling young people about wine. And to do so by delving into historical, social and cultural issues in order to promote consumption based on knowledge and awareness. A significant project to highlight the importance of a cultural approach to the world of wine.

This could be summarized as the Roma DOCet project that will characterize several events of the 2023 calendar developed by the di Tutela Vini Roma DOC and that had its “academic” baptism in a prestigious venue such as the Moscati Lecture Hall of the University of Rome Tor Vergata, Macroarea of Humanities. Where, in front of a large audience composed not only of students but also of professors, journalists and insiders, the round table “Dalla Roma Caput Vini alla Roma DOC” was held, a journey through the millennia during which the fundamental role that wine has always played in the history of Rome emerged.

Introducing the students to this fascinating journey was Professor Ernesto di Renzo, professor of Anthropology of Taste, who illustrated the different phases that have characterized the wine-Urbe binomial since time immemorial. “For our university it is a pleasure to confirm the link that has been created with the Rome DOC Consortium,” explained Di Renzo, “which among other things offers us the opportunity to provide direct experiences to our students, particularly those attending the Bachelor of Science in Tourism and Food and Wine Tourism. Explaining to them the myriad meanings that wine has in human history is not only useful study material but also an indispensable viaticum for an informed consumption of wine itself.”

The meeting, moderated by Stefano Carboni, lecturer of the Sociology of Food Behaviors and Consumption Course, included speakers Sabrina Alfonsi (Agriculture and Environment Councillor for the Municipality of Rome), Claudio Di Giovannantonio (Arsial), Michela Irione (Vini Buoni d’Italia) and Tullio Galassini (President of the Rome DOC Consortium). “The main mission of a Consortium,” Galassini stressed, “is to promote the labels of its territory, carry out controls, and work in communication. But when you carry around a name like Rome, it comes naturally to move on other paths as well. That of wine education and storytelling as a trait d’union between history, culture and social issues is an indispensable quid plus for all of us. The partnership with Tor Vergata allows us to have direct contact with young people, which we believe is fundamental for our Roma DOCet project. A project that will develop in the coming years and for which we know we can count on the necessary collaboration of the institutions.”

And it was precisely on the role of the institutions and the opportunities not to be missed that Councillor Alfonsi intervened, reiterating how focusing on a wine-products-cooking proposal represents for the City of Rome an indispensable must, the driver for an increasingly qualitative tourism with average stays worthy of the Eternal City.

That Roma DOC has what it takes to become one of the Capital’s most representative calling cards was also confirmed in the speech by Claudio Di Giovannantonio, ARSIAL manager, who made an appeal to the many students present to invest, in terms of commitment, precisely in the sector linked to wine and food tourism, which increasingly requires fresh forces and professionalism with a high degree of specialization.
