Lollobrigida: “Further milestone in defense of Italian Quality System”
Approved today, February 28, 2024, by the European Parliament meeting in plenary session, the new EU Regulation 2024 regulating, through a single text, the sectors of wines, spirits and agricultural products with Geographical Indications. The reform of the European PDO PGI system thus reaches its official finish line thanks to the agreement reached in October 2023 between the negotiators of European Parliament, EU Council and European Commission, and the green light from the Special Committee on Agriculture of the EU Council.
An important achievement, which for the first time brings together all of the world’s agri-food, wine and spirits Geographical Indication productions into a single legislative base, strengthening the role of the Protection consortia and providing more effective tools for competitive and sustainable development of the quality production sector.

De Castro: “Single text to accompany quality agribusiness toward increasingly resilient systems”
An itinerary guided by the speaker
Paolo De Castro
and which saw the entire Italian system of protection consortia and institutions in the sector work together to include in the text the priority elements for the sustainable development of the sector of primary importance in the country’s agrifood sector.
“The new Geographical Indications Regulation returns a concrete example of how Europe is able to accompany our farmers and agri-food producers toward increasingly resilient production systems,” De Castro said.Thirty years of investment and reform of our agricultural policies have, in fact, led to the creation of a true “quality policy,” decisive in making our agri-food chain unparalleled in the world in terms of food quality and sustainability of production processes, thanks in part to a unique model of protection, management and promotion of so many products synonymous with excellence, uniqueness and connection to the territory. We have created for the first time a true single European text on quality productions, which will ensure greater alignment between all sectors, safeguarding the specificities of the various sectors.”
