In Rome, the first screening of the docufilm celebrating the first 20 years of activity of the Istituto del Vino Italiano di Qualità – Grandi Marchi, from the living voice of the leading winemakers.
ForMinister Lollobrigida, “Istituto Grandi Marchi is the perfect example of how Italy, when it teams up, comes out on top in terms of quality, history, culture and tradition.”
A celebratory evening was held at Palazzo Ripetta, in the heart of the capital, marking the culmination of a program of initiatives related to the 20th anniversary ofIGM, the group of 18 great wine families that symbolize high-value Italian oenology in the world. The year 2024 marked a special milestone for IGM: two decades of enhancing and promoting the culture of fine wine on all continents, which again this year saw the producers involved in numerous international events.
Forty minutes to trace the history of the IGM
The Capitoline meeting, whose special guests were Minister Francesco Lollobrigida and Deputy Minister Maurizio Leo, provided an opportunity to relive the journey of the Istituto Grandi Marchi through the screening of a docufilm specially made to narrate its first 20 years of activity. A journey through experiences, anecdotes, intentions through the story of President Piero Mastroberardino, Honorary President Piero Antinori and all the winemakers who make up this prestigious “team.”

Forty minutes to retrace the history of the group, from the first meeting to the commitment to emerging markets, from missions in different continents to the passing of the baton between exponents of different generations. It is precisely foresight that is one of IGM’s core values, which translates into the ability to pass on a legacy of stories and values while looking to the future of the industry.
“We are back in Rome to share an important moment of this ambitious journey led together by a group of friends, before even colleagues. – stressed Piero Mastroberardino, IGM president – They are all linked by a common feeling: the symbiosis between family values and those of their land, from which spring oenological interpretations of rare beauty.
The contribution of each of these ancient and prestigious family histories contributes to compose a mosaic of good practices in the business world that transcends the specific sphere of the wine supply chain.
Hence the proposal of a program of activities that, in one with the mission of defending and enhancing our supply chain, promotes initiatives of an ethical nature and investments with high sustainability. This makes IGM a harmonious representation of the typical biodiversity of the boot wine heritage.”
Minister Lollobrigida has the floor
On the importance of the role that Istituto Grandi Marchi has played for the past 20 years, Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry Francesco Lollobrigida also commented.
“IGM should be credited with the great merit of having put aside individualism in favor of teamwork , ” explained Minister Lollobrigida, “In doing so, it has shown how Italy, when it moves as a system, is always a winner thanks to a heritage made up of extraordinary quality and human skills that are in our DNA.
Here we are dealing with great families, representative of their territories and able to keep up with the times without ever losing their roots and identity.
Finally, the way of proposing wine of this group should be emphasized, in an approach to this wonderful product made of culture and awareness.” Much appreciated was the speech by Maurizio Leo, Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance, who reiterated the attention of the current government on the main fiscal issues that characterize the wine supply chain, the world of agriculture and agritourism, the delicate profiles of family business and generational transitions, briefly illustrating the work that the Executive is carrying out precisely in the area of family businesses in the sector.
Piero Antinori’s speech
Closing the evening was a speech by the group’s first president.
“It was 2003 when we producers met for the first time ,” recounted Piero Antinori, past president of IGM – on the occasion of a Wine Experience in New York. Thus began this great adventure that has seen our wines open new frontiers, from Russia to China, to Southeast Asia, missions to Australia, India, Malaysia, and many other markets that are still considered emerging but at the time represented a true pioneering operation. Over the years our attention has also shifted to more established scenarios: already well-known are our missions to the USA, Canada and England, which each year confirm the growing interest of these markets as much for our labels as for the style and culture that distinguish us.”
The evening in Rome concluded with a tasting of IGM’s finest labels in the elegant spaces of Palazzo Ripetta.
