Basalto, here is the new gourmet restaurant in Catania

New opening: Palazzo Sangiorgio, a newly opened five-star luxury hotel in the heart of Catania's historic center, holds a precious gourmet corner with street-level entrance and open to all.

In Catania’s ancient Civita district, amid ancient noble palaces of black stone and the popular Piscaria market, Palazzo Sangiorgio, a new luxury accommodation facility, has recently opened. Twenty-five rooms including five suites as well as a spa and a gourmet restaurant:
Basalt.

Basalto is the restaurant with an entrance on the hotel’s street level that will offer the opportunity to enjoy elegant traditional Sicilian dishes in a contemporary key not only to hotel guests but also to the city’s diverse public, a corner of refreshment and goodness in the heart of Catania’s historic center open to all.

From the very beginning, Basalto wants to express a soul of its own with respect to the hotel structure and become a reference point for catering in the Catania area. Jonathan Mirabella, class of 1996, is the young chef at the helm of the restaurant. Despite his young age, he already has significant previous experience in luxury hotellerie kitchens and has very clear ideas.
The menu, straight and precise, aims to ride the classics of Sicilian cuisine, yet interpret tradition in a wholly personal key, through contemporary techniques and touches of exoticism that exploit winking and comfortable pairings.

Thus the classic pasta alla norma becomes an eggplant ravioli on a salted ricotta cream, while mullet fillet meets apples and purple potato. A soft and elegant kitchen where dishes are cozy and comfortable. Basalto’s cuisine is a pampering to lay back on and be carried away, perfectly in keeping with the refined atmosphere and high-end services of the exclusive 5-star luxury hotel in the heart of Catania.

Palazzo Sangiorgio also wanted to think of the roof top and the inner courtyard, with the imposing Staircase by Vaccarini (a well-known Sicilian Baroque architect) as places to serve the restaurant. Here one can enjoy dinner, aperitifs or elegant refreshments at private events, carefully prepared by the chef and his brigade to enjoy a fine selection of gastronomic offerings in the heart of Catania’s historic center, but from a decidedly different perspective.

The wine list ranges from regional and Italian offerings to an excellent selection of international wines and champagnes.
