With inclusion in the Register of Historical Trademarks of National Interest., established at the Italian Patent and Trademark Office, Braida joins the elite group of Italian businesses recognized not only for their longevity but also for their significant contribution to the country’s culture and tradition.
Braida, the story
Founded in 1961 by Giacomo Bologna, “Braida” celebrates its 63rd vintage this year. For more than six decades, the winery in Rocchetta Tanaro, a few kilometers from Asti, has continued to write a story of passion and pioneering spirit, linked to the native grape varieties of Piedmont. Among these, Barbera is the beating heart of production, revolutionized by Giacomo Bologna, who transformed it from an everyday wine to an international icon with historic labels such as La Monella (the wine of the origins, first vintage 1961, first Barbera to be bottled and labeled, baptized with its own name), Bricco dell’Uccellone (the fulfillment of the revolution, first vintage 1982), Bricco della Bigotta (1985), Ai Suma (late harvest Barbera, first vintage 1989), Montebruna (first vintage 2001) and Curej (latest addition to Braida, first vintage 2019, from an extraordinary vineyard surrounding the Braida Wine Resort on the Asinara hill in Rocchetta Tanaro). Not only Barbera: “Braida” has always linked its name also to native grape varieties such as Grignolino, Moscato, Brachetto.
The establishment of the brand
“Our father Giacomo,” say Raffaella and Giuseppe Bologna, owners of the winery, “in addition to producing Piedmontese wines, in the early years he marketed great Italian and foreign labels, sometimes even discovering and launching new oenological talents. This is also why bottles of all origins have always been opened in our house, stimulating our imagination and taste, opening our conception of the world of wine and its production and continually raising the bar of quality. At the same pace, our awareness grew and “Braida” was defined as it is now: from the first fairs in the 1960s and 1970s, with a stand made entirely of wine, to the important work with Giacomo Bersanetti and Chiara Veronelli in the very early 1980s, who together with our parents Giacomo Bologna and Anna Martinengo built a “Braida” image and style along with our iconic labels, which have been the same for more than forty years now. Today, the fourth generation of the Bologna family, the generation of our children, enters the company with a commitment to keep alive the values and spirit of innovation that have made Braida wines famous around the world and to follow up on the efforts made so far by all of us.”
